Risk Modeling
While CRC is among the most preventable and treatable of neoplastic diseases when detected early via screening; screening is costly, invasive, and carries risks. Additionally, current screening recommendations rely only on age, family history of CRC and previous screening results.
GECCO is working on developing a comprehensive risk-prediction model that utilizes genetic and epidemiologic data to better characterize a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. The model will incorporate genome-wide genetic data, as well as lifestyle and environmental risk factors.
Drs. Li Hsu and Jeon Jihyoun are expecting to publish on their initial risk model shortly, with a focus on the known genetic variants, family history and endoscopy history. This model will then be expanded to include environmental factors.
